International Organization for Standardization - ISO
ISO is a non-governmental organization established in 1940. The mission of ISO is to promote the development of standardization and related activities in the world with a view to facilitating the international exchange of goods and services, and to developing in the spheres of intellectual, scientific, technological and economic activity. ISO’s work results in international agreements which are published as International Standards.
ISO Members
Member body is national body most representative of standardization in the respective country. It follows that only one such body for each country is accepted for membership.
Correspondent member is usually an organization in a country which does not yet have a fully developed national standards activity or national standard body. Correspondent members do not take an active part in the technical work, but are entitled to be kept fully informed about the work of interest to them.
Subscriber member is a country with very small economy. These Subscriber members pay reduced membership fees that nevertheless allow them to maintain contact with international standardization.
Policy development committees
The organs of the Organization shall be a General Assembly, a Council, a Technical Management Board, technical committees, and a Central Secretariat.
The General Assembly shall be constituted by a meeting of the officers and delegates nominated by the member bodies. Correspondent members and subscriber members may attend as observers.
The General Assembly establish advisory committee, called policy development committees :
- Committee on conformity assessment - CASCO
- Committee on consumer policy - COPOLCO
- Committee on developing country matters - DEVCO
They are open to interested member bodies as participating (P) or observer (O) members and correspondent members as observer (O) members.
Technical Committee
The technical work of ISO is carried out by technical committees (TCs) and subcommittees (SCs). Member body has the right to participate in the work of technical committees and subcommittees as
Participating member (P-member) with an obligation to vote on all questions formally submitted for voting within technical committee or subcommittee, and to participate in meetings, or
Observer member (O-member) to follow the work as an observer and therefore to receive committee documents and to have right to submit comments and to attend meetings.
Thailand and ISO
Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI), the national standard body of Thailand, has been participating as member body in ISO since 1965.
